Bone Hurting Juice is an image macro series and photoshop meme centered around a fictitious type of juice that causes aching sensations in the drinker's bones when consumed, often resulting in the cry "oww oof my bones." The meme spawned a genre of memes based on alternative interpretation of meme formats, with notable communities collecting such memes established on Facebook and Reddit.

Discord Server History

BoneHurtingJuice, now known as "野蛮なガーフィールド", roughly translating to "savage garfield" was the official discord server of the r/BoneHurtingJuice subreddit, the BHJ subreddit itself has had two discord servers in it's lifespan, the first one has somewhat influenced the Irony Hemisphere, as for the second one it remained somewhat inactive and was deleted sometime in 2022. The first server was unpartnered off the subreddit sometime around (2019?), it was also created on May 17th of 2017. It remains one of the few Irony Servers created as far away as 2017 that still exist. The first server's membercount peak was around ~900/1000, whilst the second one peaked around ~300/400 before being deleted, the second discord server would be managed by schmer, whilst the first one would be managed by Kirbizia before she abandoned the server, causing a split between the discord server and subreddit. The server's activity and membercount has been dropping down ever since.

Origin

On July 8th, 2016, the Fun Silly Drawings for Fun Silly People Facebook page posted a Sweet Jesus, Pooh! comic in which Pooh says "owww my bones hurt a lot oww oof my booones" after drinking "bone hurting juice" (shown below). On December 18th, 2016, a thread about bone hurting juice was started on the image board 420Chan (shown below). On August 11th, 2016, the Bone Hurting Juice Facebook page was launched, and on April 7th, 2017, the /r/bonehurtingjuice subreddit was launched by Kirbizia.

Racist Marios

On the 2nd of October 2017, a user by the name of u/theracistmario would take control of the r/bonehurtingjuice subreddit, an announcement would be made about the hack by this "Racist Mario" stating that he hacked the subreddit.

Many users wondered if this announcement was fake, a post on the subreddit r/subredditdrama was also made relating to this incident, all mods were also removed off the subreddit, and the CSS was also turned into a "nightmare" stated by another subreddit user. People seemed very upset, racistmario stated that he would not free the subreddit until his video reached "1,000,000,000 views", a pretty unreachable amount if you're not the artist behind Despacito.

Grinch related Memes on BHJ.

Racist Mario would also announce that he killed Rick from Rick and Morty... Screenshots would also later be sent which proved that it all was a hoax made by Kirbizia. She would also admit to this being planned by her on subreddit, but would later delete this responce, it would also be confirmed by one of the admins that this was all a hoax, the discord server was also raided by racist mario with the name being changed to RACIST MARIO!!!!! And the icon also becoming mario, shown by the screenshot in the gallery.

The Grinch Movie hacks BHJ

On April 1st 2019 a user by the name of u/GRlNCHMOVlE (with an L instead of an I) announced that they "hacked" the subreddit, similar to what had happened during the Racist Mario event, this event was led by Kirbizia. Users would have to send grinch themed memes too, this troll only lasted for a day, making it the shortest one.

"Operation Chungus"

On November 15th, 2019, a moderator team of 600,000 subscriber strong /r/bonehurtingjuice subreddit restricted the community to only allow posts from moderators and approved posters. While no official reason for the action was provided at that time, users on /r/bonehurtingjuice and related subreddits speculated that the moderation team was dissatisfied with the decreasing quality of posts in the community and "bone hurting juice" meme format generally becoming obsolete and made a decision to "kill" the sub, similar to what had happened to DeepFriedMemes. In the following days, /r/bonehurtingjuice moderation team and a number of approved users from the /r/bonehurtingjuice Discord uploaded shitposts and ironic memes not in vein with the the usual content on the sub. Additionally, the CSS of the subreddit was altered to a mess of random images.

On November 16th, 2019, a refuge /r/boneachingjuice subreddit was created by doofusllama, gaining over 21,900 members in three days. Additionally, more subreddits such as /r/BoneHurtJuice, /r/subkillingjuice, /r/bonehurting_juice were created, with the smaller subreddits later merging with /r/boneachingjuice. In that period, /r/boneachingjuice moderator TerrryTerr was removed from the moderation team due to using racial and homophobic slurs on the /r/boneachingjuice Discord. On November 17th, a post about the /r/bonehurtingjuice restriction was created in /r/SubredditDrama, gaining over 2,500 upvotes in three days.

On November 18th, 2019, /r/bonehurtingjuice moderation team lifted the previously imposed restrictions. On the same day, a now-deleted moderator account posted an explanation post about the recent events, claiming that Operation Chungus was an attempt to destroy the sub and writing that Redditor Kirbizia, the original founder of /r/bonehurtingjuice who was friends with several of its current moderators, insisted that the sub would be reopened. In the following hours, the explanation was several times reposted to /r/copypasta.

January 26th Coronavirus Lockdown

On the 26th of January 2020 a mod by the name of /u/furrytesticlesack would release a statement about a "quarantine" of the subreddit to stop the spread of the coronavirus, most of the subscribers would be weirded out by this and were somewhat discontent about losing their subreddit (ONCE AGAIN). Some thought that this was an attempt to kill the subreddit once and for all , this would go for a few weeks. And a r/subredditdrama post was made detailing all this which gained a lot of attention.

Reddit Mods Lives Matter. RLM.

Furrytesticlesack also attempted to make a post asking "to be nice to your reddit moderators", along with a picture of the Reddit logo with blue and black stripes, similar to the Blue Lives Matter Flag. Almost all of the comments were filled with angry rants, since understandably so the users were pretty mad about all this. He would also attempt to compare reddit mods to police officers. Finally though the subreddit would be opened once more after this terrific troll attempt, furrytesticlesack was also removed from the mod team, (he would somehow return back) and come with a revenge... Kirbizia would also make an official statement about this drama and also begin new staff applications for the subreddit.

“	As of posting the subreddit should be fixed with css reverted as well as many posts removed, but more importantly the subreddit should be unrestricted to be open to posts again. Many mods have been removed ( /u/furrytesticlesack most importantly) and we will be hosting mod applications and will likely have new mods by next week so be sure to apply here From now on the mod team will be dedicated to keeping the sub fresh and not stagnant, and a situation like this will not happen again. We on the mod team legitimately apologize and hope you can continue to enjoy the subreddit from now on. We will change this subreddit from what it currently is. We will not do another thing like this again. So the mod team has done events like this in the past (racist mario, the grinch and operation chungus) and most of them initially were stemmed from a cynical view of the viewer base. To see the baseline idea and funny of the subreddit be degraded and eroded over time into something unrecognizable no matter how hard the mods tried made them resentful of the viewerbase. Some specific mods became legitimately hatefully towards all redditors in general and just wanted to see them angry and despondent. The other mods at best saw it as a chance to take the piss out of our "normie audience". In terms of the specific actions it was not a cohesive moderator team effort, with one or two people proposing it and some other mods egging them on but most of what happened were actions of a small amount of individuals who took it too far. I myself did take the opportunity to take some piss out of the audience, which I apologize for. I personally had to finally step in as head mod and put a stop to the action. Whether or not it retains to the "original vision" of the subreddit "normie" or not people still enjoy the subreddit and it was not ok to take that from them. It is important to note the range of reactions to this specific event with many mods who weren't even involved receiving many death threats and threats of violence. Alot of time these reactions were used to fuel the cynical view of the audience. There were some people who were legitimately concerned for the health of the subreddit and sent messages asking about what was happening and I thank those people. We're not asking for complete absolution or anything of the sort just an understanding of what happened.	„

Communist Takeover of 2023

On June 2023, /u/furrytesticlesack would come back and establish r/bonehurtingjuice as a communist meme subreddit, as an effort to "protest the API changes" the entire subreddit would be closed down for a bit, then some posts would begin to appear which were related to communism, all posts which actually fell into what a BHJ meme was would be deleted, and furrytesticlesack would let all unrelated communist memes in, this would go for around a month until Kirbizia gave u/myszPL mod permissions to bring the subreddit back to normal, during this fake communist takeover a few refuge communities would be formed, similarly to what had happened during Operation Chungus, many posts on the subreddit r/justunsubbed would also be made detailing users' discontent with what had happened, aswell as posts on r/enoughcommiespam related to the takeover. Detailing that the subreddit became an "unfunny communist circlejerk" (they weren't wrong.)

BHJ has been Liberated!

Some would be even banned for speaking against this troll attempt, though they were ultimately unbanned after the subreddit finally returned to normal. The announcement below marked the end of the communist takeover. On July 6th 2023 u/furrytesticlesack would be removed from his mod position on the subreddit. (Hopefully once and for all)
