On July 27, 2022, just before 3 am UTC, Discord Trust & Safety sent a direct message to the moderators of Whenthe, indicating that action may be taken on their accounts for moderating a server that violates Discord's Community Guidelines. This implies that the server had recently been mass-reported. In response, the mod team immediately freaked out and locked every channel on the server. Shortly thereafter, mods completely deleted all four main channels (#general, #casual, #serious, and #bots).
The mod team's response was unsurprisingly very controversial. The action was considered by many to be an extreme overreaction, especially when you consider that the deleted channels had almost 4 years of history, and that a similar scare happened 7 months earlier and the server emerged just fine. However, some defended the action as necessary to protect the server from future incidents like this (the server contained a lot of slurs from over the years).
The crisis caused a lot of instability. As the server was fully locked down, people had to move to whentwo (the backup server) to talk. Owner The Pastor, as well as admin yote, resigned shortly afterwards. Steely was announced to be the new owner later that day.
As of July 30, the server is still locked down.
