Shark_Park is a Discord Irony Server made for the subreddit r/Shark_Park on the 5th of August 2021 by Text101. It is the 3rd server made for r/Shark_Park, with previous ones being Swag_Society and the old Shark_Park Discord. The server is officially linked to the subreddit and is still active as of now, with over 1,600 members.

Design[edit | edit source]

Shark_Park's server design mostly is a parody of meme culture. Roles, banners and even behaviour are focused on being parodies of old and current meme-humor. The server is structured between 11 Categories with over 40 channels. The Categories go down from top to bottom like this:

Rules[edit | edit source]

There are currrently 12 rules in Shark_Park listed in the #rules channel. They are in short as follows:

  1. Do not break Discord ToS!
  2. Just don't be toxic.
  3. No NSFW content, illegal / "extreme" content.
  4. Use of extreme slurs that are not accepted socially are also not accepted here.
  5. No attacking/insulting people unless it's clearly specified as a joke.
  6. Do not join the server for the purpose of spreading hate speech.
  7. No spam anywhere.
  8. Do not harass new members.
  9. Don't join just to advertise/promote another server.
  10. Use respective chats as they are intended to.
  11. Do not try to evade punishments.
  12. For talk about suicide or depression, do not seek for help in here.

Moderator roles are divided between Admins, Mods and "Jannies". Admins being the highest in the hierarchy and Jannies the lowest. Moderators in Shark_Park change constantly. But there are a few notable moderators who have managed to stay for the longest.

The server was created by Text101 on June 18, 2021. On August 5, 2021, it was opened as the official Discord server for r/Shark_Park.

The subreddit's description reads "Memes, shitposts, irony, (un)funny and philosophical discussions", while the alternative page title of the Reddit is "Obama". The New Reddit light mode version of the subreddit displays the use of purple for the design and the inversion of the colors on the downvote and upvote arrows. The Old Reddit design of the subreddit has not been customized.

There are currently 10 rules, which are a mix between sincere and ironic rules. The rules are listed as:

Creation[edit | edit source]

On the 26th of January 2021 u/I_Follow_Shark_Ladys created r/Shark_Park. He created it after it got suggested to him by one of his Reddit followers. The purpose of the subreddit was not defined then, it was originally just made to house followers of his account and let them post whatever they wanted. The original subreddit icon was a picture of influential V-Tuber Gawr Gura. On the first few days the posts on the subreddit were mostly random and also had users posting porn and Chinese Communist propaganda. This changed after rules were enforced and an information post had been made on the subreddit.[2]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

In February 2021 the subreddit hit 1000 members. At that time the subreddit was getting new moderators. Which were u/fatyoshi48, u/niehto and u/Head-butt-man. On the 2nd of February a vote on a moderator was held, which u/cobalt12390 won.[3] These moderators were later all removed.

u/niehto created the first Shark_Park Discord Server in March,[4] which was later approved as the official Discord by u/I_Follow_Shark_Ladys. The server was then replaced by another in April.[5] The second Discord server was then called Swag_Society.

On March 24th r/Shark_Park was temporarly closed for 24 hours due to participating in a site wide protest against a pedophilic Reddit admin.[6]

The subreddit had also introduced user-flairs, which were shark themed.[7]

On April 1st the subreddit was turned into r/Doggo_Park, changing the theme to dogs and replacing the icon with popular V-Tuber Inugami Korone.[8]

June 7th r/Shark_Park was mentioned by the YouTube channel EmKay and refered to as "Shark_Pak".[9]

August-December 2021[edit | edit source]

By August all old subreddit moderators except the owner were removed. Swag_Society was also replaced by the now Shark Park Discord.[10]

The icon was changed to an edited image of a shark smoking weed.

Middle of September the subreddit had gained 3 new moderators: u/Wal-Weegee, KolopiGamingAndStuff and u/randomguyfromafrica. u/I_Follow_Shark_Ladys founded the USSN (United Shitposting Subreddit Network) with other shitposting subreddit owners.[11] This led to Shark Park being advertised on other subreddits and the sub displaying other communities on their sidebar.

Following in December the community had grown to 6000 members.

2022[edit | edit source]

On January 26th was the 1 year anniversary. The growth of the subreddit was increasing thanks to more engagement within the community, meaning that more and more people would join. In March the member count increased to 7000 and continued to grow faster ever since.

On April 1st the subreddit partook in the r/Place 2 event that was taking place, building a small pixelated shark next to the builds of r/196, r/Belgium and r/bangtan.[12]

The USSN was desolving, so some of the linked subreddits changed and new ones were added. These are the ones that got added:

The member count grew to 10000 on June 17th. This enabled the predictions feature and the Tournament of Awesomeness was started. The subreddit icon was also changed to a picture of Matpat from Game Theory with a green text overlay saying "I'm insane".

On July 7th Shark_Park was closed until July 16th. This was due to I_Follow_Shark_Ladys having wanted to shut down the subreddit.[13] When the sub was privated all moderators were removed again and nobody but I_Follow_Shark_Ladys could post until the 22nd. The subreddit icon was changed to a picture of Hideo Kojima after going public again.

September 2nd the member count went up to 15000. Due to this the subreddit introduced post-flairs, a revamp of the older user-flairs, a new predictions tournament, and the new current moderators.[14]
