/r/ComedyHitmen is a meme subreddit sister to ComedyCemetery. It was created on January 29, 2018 by user u/CosmicMemer. It's main gimmic is being a community who "assasinates" memes by using them to make some of the most unfunniest and cringe worthy posts, users can also request memes to be assassinated and for other users to try their best at doing the hard work.

What Fits into The Subreddit

Requests to "assassinate" a meme, people's own assassinations of memes, vice versa.

Subreddit History

Origins

The subreddit was created on January 29th, 2018 by user u/CosmicMemer, inspired by an r/AskReddit comment. It is yet another subreddit inspired by /r/ComedyCemetery, being dedicated to "assassinating" memes instead.

Day 2 Update

On January 31st, 2018 u/CosmicMemer would release a statement two days after the subreddit's creation, he would announce the creation of an official /r/ComedyHitmen discord server, a rule for brigading subreddits would be introduced and some other minor things would be also announced, such as to not beg to become the subreddit's moderator. In the announcement he would also declare an all-out war to the ugandan knuckle meme.

Algebra Parody

On February 19th, 2018 one of r/ComedyHitmen's users would post the subreddit's first announcement. The flair is not blocked for regular users, thus they can "make announcements" themselves by using the flair, the point of the announcement would be to kill the it's everyday bro meme for an algebra teacher to perform to kill the meme, other users would pitch in and make contributions to the document, the lyrics of the full parody wouldn't be realized, but the most famous verse would. The final results looked like this.

First official Meme Assassination Mega-Thread

On April 25th, 2018 the owner of the subreddit, u/CosmicMemer would open the subreddit's first official "Meme Target" megathread, users could suggest memes to kill off within the comment section, u/CosmicMemer would also put down some other suggestions of memes he wished to kill.

Hey pals, We're tired of fortnite. We're voting on a new, official, dying meme to focus on. Most likely candidates so far are the Eric Andre shooting, Yodeling Walmart kid, free real estate, and Zucc memes. Add any suggestions in the comments, or suggest something be removed. We'll take all this into account when making the next poll. Thanks!

u/CosmicMemer

Minor Event

On April 27th, 2018 the moderators would host a Cards Against Humanity event and a truth or dare on the subreddit aswell as the subreddit's official discord server.

Fortnite Meme Competition

On April 30th, 2018 a small competition would be hosted on the subreddit by moderators, first person that would get a meme from the /r/ComedyHitmen subreddit onto any Fortnite related subreddit (with atleast 1000 subscribers) would get to be "the coolest kid on the subreddit."

The Great Meme Crusade

The Death of Ligma - Some of this was probably due to /r/ComedyHitmen making the meme "NORMIE ASF..."

Starting from May 22th until December 5th of 2018, countless mods of the subreddit would constantly try to get the users of the subreddit to make low-effort unfunny posts with certain memes, to try to kill them fast, the first meme to get chosen was the "yes'nt" meme, "if it belongs in r/fellowkids, it's a perfect hitman meme" the mods would announce whenever a meme was "truly dead" using google trends and other methods, with each announcement there would be a public poll to see which meme members of the subreddit wanna eliminate next, Dame tu Cosita, Car Salesman, Ligma aswell as Moth Lamp and They did a surgery on a Grape would meet a terrific fate of being assassinated by r/ComedyHitmen.

Spicy Meme Dillema

On June 30th, 2019 mod u/ifreakinglovepancake would send an announcement regarding "too spicy" memes, as the whole mod team would see an influx of obviously too spicy and ironic memes being sent onto the subreddit, in the announcement the mod would explain what a too spicy meme was.

A meme that’s Too Spicy is an obviously ironic and/or too bad meme. These memes are terrible, but they cross the line between just being a cringy meme a teacher would share into an obvious means of sabotaging the meme. However, these memes are still hilarious! They just fit in better on r/okbuddyretard rather than here.

u/ifreakinglovepancake

In other words, Ifunny watermarks, sarcastic bro, overuse of rage faces, emojis (funwaa) and vice versa, as you probably know the moderator was pretty much explaining what would become the status quo of the ironic meme post the fame of /r/OkBuddyRetard.

1 Year Anniversary Contest

On January 23rd, 2019 mod u/ifreakinglovepancake would announce a new, more refined competition. For the one year anniversary of the subreddit, there would be a contest hosted. All new posts starting from January 23rd to 31st would enter the pool, the meme with the highest upvote count would win and it's creator would receive reddit premium aswell as the meme would be pinned on the subreddit for a set amount of time.

Gangstars_IRL Alliance

On July 11th, 2019 the mod u/ifreakinglovepancake would announce an alliance between /r/ComedyHitmen aswell as r/Gangstars_irl, together they would attempt to kill the nobody : memes, this was started by the r/Gangstars_irl subreddit, but as the nobody : meme is a disgrace and was to be eradicated, the ComedyHitmen subreddit would also help on with the fight.

The Cakeday Crusades

EPIC FAIL...

The Cakeday Crusades

On February 5th, 2020 user u/JustAredditUser69 would post an announcement in which he would state that he wanted to do something special for his cakeday, it was to kill the concept of cakeday memes and cakeday upvote whoring for the greater good, and to stop people from using this as a way to farm many upvotes and make shitty meta-memes. Other members would pitch in and start brigading many subreddits with low-quality cakeday memes when it wasn't even the day of their actual cakeday. The crusade would officially start on February 9th 2020 but would not bring much result nor drama.

/r/DankMemes and /r/PewdiepieSubmissions Brigading Drama

On January 19th, 2020 the moderators would finally adress an issue that had been brewing within the community for a while, a problem with members brigading subreddits such as /r/DankMemes aswell as /r/PewdiepieSubmissions with memes that had been made within /r/ComedyHitmen, but also spamming certain phrases such as "KEANU CHUNGUS WHOLESOME 100", as this had a huge risk of having the subreddit be banned for not following "reddiquete" as this was considered brigading a subreddit, in "discord terms" raiding it. A long campaign of dramas, raiding, brigading would start, as starting from March 8th many users would use the announcements flair to send screenshots of them getting banned from the /r/PewdiepieSubmissions subreddit for various reasons, the mods of that subreddit would banwave many of /r/ComedyHitmen's users aswell as setup an AutoMod to ban anyone who interacts with the community for 30 days.

Second Statement From Moderators

Eventually on March 9th, 2020 moderator u/KingBrandoTheIgit would release a statement - "Stop harassing r/PewdiepieSubmissions" in which he would explain to not harass any subreddit, as there was a noticeable wave of users targeting and brigading the PewdiepieSubmissions subreddit for being "Too Normie." The subreddit moderators feared ending up the same as /r/GamersRiseUp (The users of the subreddit used it for totally different purposes) and anyone who would call for the raiding of subreddits or a harassment of a user would be banned permanently off /r/ComedyHitmen.

On March 20th, 2020 u/KingBrandoTheIgit would release yet another statement, as the subreddit was pretty much on thin ice from being banned he would try to delegate with the moderators of the affected communities to make it right,

Greetings hitmen. As you might know, our sub recently got into problems with other subreddits. Our users would get banned from other subs simply for participating in ours, regardless of whether or not those users have so much as visited those other subs. This situation was caused by the users on our end who brigaded and spammed across multiple subreddits, and was addressed in our previous announcement. Obviously, not everyone did this, but those who did were breaking Reddit's Terms of Service, which put our subreddit on thin ice.

u/KingBrandoTheIgit

The users of /r/ComedyHitmen would have to stop mentioning the moderators of outside subreddits for answers, or harassing them for not approving ban appeals, and they would also have to stop making posts or comments with something along the lines of "posting this to /r/randomsubreddit", this would from then become a bannable offense.

r/ComedyHitmen was never meant to be used as a platform to spam or brigade other subreddits. We started as a way to think of neat ideas that would help kill a meme that has been overused. We can still do that and would like to hear your thoughts in this comment section. I can't speak for the other mods, but I will personally do my best to address as much questions and comments as I can as soon as possible.

u/KingBrandoTheIgit

Eventually the drama would settle, the moderators of /r/PewdiepieSubmissions would still be somewhat mad at the subreddit but the brigading would stop and things would return to an okay state.

Too Spicy Rule

Starting from April 30th, 2020 the "Too Spicy" rule would start being enforced again, meme assassinations with Big Chungus, Keanu Reeves, Reddit Watermarks, Skyrim 100, Nobody Liked That, Baby Yoda or Chicken Nuggies would stop being allowed on the subreddit as it was too obvious that the post was ironic and not it wasn't a serious meme assassination.
