Irony Wiki:Privacy policy

Irony Wiki ("we", "us", "our", "Wiki") respects its users’ fundamental right to privacy. We take care to ensure that your data is not used in any way that is unnecessary to the operations of the Wiki. This document exists to inform you of the data that we collect and the ways in which we use it. By using Irony Wiki, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this privacy policy.

Data collection

Irony Wiki operates using the MediaWiki software. MediaWiki is free and open-source software overseen by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation; there may be additional details about the software’s data collection on their privacy policy. The software may collect the following information about users of the Wiki:

Public user account settings if they are explicitly provided, including usernames, real names, gender, etc.
Private user account settings and metadata, such as user preferences, encrypted passwords, etc.
Metadata automatically logged by the web server for every HTTP request, including the IP address and user agent of the user making the request (this data is deleted after 14 days)
Certain actions (page moves, file uploads, etc.) and edits the user has made, along with the time they were performed, which are publicly viewable in the Public Logs, User Contributions, or Page History
- If you make any edits while not logged in to an account, the software will use your IP address to identify you, since it does not have any other name to identify you with. Your IP address will thus be indefinitely publicly visible in this case. See the revision deletion page or the contact info section below if you would like this info hidden from public view.
- If you attempt to make an edit, but your edit was blocked by the abuse filter, the information about the edit as well as your IP address will be stored. Detailed information about the attempted edit (such as the edit contents) is not public and is only viewable by administrators. The IP address from which the edit was made is stored in the database but is only viewable to those with direct access to the database (i.e. the website owner).
Pages a user has visited and search terms they have used (deleted within 90 days, if retained at all)
Aggregate data on the number of times an event has happened (e.g. the number of views a page has received), not associated with any particular users

Locally stored data

Irony Wiki utilizes cookies and local storage to store some data on your device. These technologies are used solely to improve your experience by storing information such as session tokens (so that you stay logged in to your account), previously visited pages, and user preferences. We do not use cross-site or third-party cookies. Locally stored data can be deleted from your device at any time via your web browser’s settings.

Usage of data

Irony Wiki does not exist to make a profit. Irony Wiki makes no revenue and never sells data to third parties. The data we collect is used solely to provide our own services. We do not display advertisements. We do not track you across sites.

Due to the permanent nature of the MediaWiki software, Irony Wiki stores most data indefinitely. For example, although deleted pages are not publicly accessible, they are still stored in the database and can be restored at any time. Data types that are automatically deleted are noted in the data collection section above. Irony Wiki utilizes the services of the following third parties:

The hardware that hosts Irony Wiki is owned by DigitalOcean, LLC. The entirety of Irony Wiki and its user data (except for the previously mentioned locally stored data) exists on hardware located in DigitalOcean’s SFO2 data center near San Francisco, California, United States. DigitalOcean merely provides us with hardware to host the wiki on for a monthly fee and has no liability for the contents or data of the Wiki. See also DigitalOcean’s privacy policy.
Irony Wiki uses the services of hCaptcha (Intuition Machines, Inc.) to serve CAPTCHAs to users. These CAPTCHAs are only served in certain circumstances, such as upon account creation and when a new or unregistered user inserts an external link into an edit, and exists to combat spam by verifying that the user is human. hCaptcha is fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act. Some pages contain embedded media from services such as YouTube, Spotify, Twitch, SoundCloud, Vimeo, etc. These services may gather data about you; see their respective privacy policies. We have no control over how these third-party media services handle your data. These media embeds are opt-in; they do not load, and therefore do not collect data, until the user has given permission for the media to load.
We reserve the right to disclose your information to an authority if we reasonably believe it necessary to satisfy a valid and legally enforceable warrant, subpoena, court order, law or regulation, or other judicial or administrative order.

Irony Wiki will ask for your permission prior to sharing your data with any third party not mentioned above.

Security

Irony Wiki takes precautions to protect against unauthorized access to user data. The security of your data is important to us, but no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Transfer of ownership

In the event that Irony Wiki is transferred to a different owner, your personal data may be transferred and may become subject to a different privacy policy. You will be notified prior to such a transfer taking place.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. Unless noted otherwise, new policies take effect as soon as they appear on this page.
