| On June 29, 2020, Reddit went through with a banwave that banned many subreddits, including r/the_Donald, r/ChapoTraphouse, and more. r/bigchungus was one of the banned subreddits. There was a relatively large controversy surrounding this, as reddit had been cracking down on bigotry, many subreddit mods and owners feared that their subs will reach a similar fate despite attempts to moderate it, especially subreddits with a similar humor like /r/[[OkBuddyRetard]]. Users of many ironic reddit communities would massively circlejerk this ban, due to big chungus' ironic nature. <small>How could big chungus be such a bigot.</small>

| This mass ban wave is speculated to had been mainly done due to an open letter being sent by users of /r/[[AgainstHateSubreddits]]. Which had reached around 30 thousand upvotes, the users had goals such as to hire more minorities and women of color, and banning hate communities such as /r/BigChungus.

| Some had also speculated and had theories made about a connection to long-banned r/ChungusRight and r/ChungusEthnostate subreddits, along with the fact that a r/ConsumeProduct had a mod named NazbolChungus.

| Eventually r/BigChungusReligion would become the "main" BigChungus subreddit, with it now reaching around ~40 Thousand users as of 2023. Some stated that reddit administrators banned /r/bigchungus to draw attention away from all the other subs they banned during the large ban wave, as it currently now stands, the future of /r/BigChungus is lost, as there had been many attempts to revive the subreddits and many many Mod Requests. With all of them being declined. Some also recognize that this banishment is relatively similar to the ban of /r/[[LegoYoda]].
