The 69MoeLester420 Discord server was a small server dedicated to the shitposting subreddit r/69MoeLester420. Although it closed on March 30, 2023, after it merged with the SwagBalls Discord server, and despite its small size, numbering barely 50 members at its peak, the cultural impact of this place should not be understated, as much of the drama present in the old server transferred to the new one. Some of the drama got resolved, buried, yet still remembered. Some of it might forever plague the new server as well. Only time will tell. Until then, may the history of this server stay preserved and serve as a cautionary tale.
History
r/place
The server first opened on April 3, 2022, during r/place, at the initiative of WalterWhiteOnReddit and Max5923. Soon enough, some of the other mods decided to join the event, their esteemed names being:
- Mr. Sex
- SlenderSmurf
- Mendev
- Gladiux
Some of these people would soon fade into obscurity. Others, however, will forever remain part of the 69MoeLester420 mythos. As the server link was soon posted to the subreddit, ordinary members decided to join. As is the nature with servers like these, people join, only to drift away after a while, yet one person in particular, an individual known only as Deez, remained an active member of the server until its very end, despite, by his own admission, never having heard of the subreddit before joining. Godspeed, Deez.
Early History
As the event soon concluded, the moederators simply decided to keep using the place, having been much more convenient than modmail during the past few days. For a while, the server remained relatively inactive, with a few shitposts having been posted daily without much discussion in between, at best consisting of a dozen messages before going quiet again. They say hindsight is 20/20, many things we may simply ignore at the time and sometimes forget even happened, change their character once looked at in a different light. The fact that Gladiux was quick to insult anything he didn't find funny was one of them. At the time missed as he expressed thoughts perhaps shared by us, looked back on it almost seems to foreshadow the events that would transpire an entire year later.
On April 4, Bufner joined the server.
On May 22, Gio249, another subreddit mod and a friend of Gladiux, joined the server.
The Renaissance Era
On May 23, Better Call Saul Presents: Slippin' Jimmy is released on AMC+. The Breaking Bad community goes wild. Having been released so close to the season 6 finale of Better Call Saul, a show of such a low caliber was seen almost as a personal insult, a clear cash-grab meant to do nothing but capitalize on the success of its sister show, Family Guy for kids, with none other than Saul Goodman as its face. Those were the opinions of the uneducated masses, of course, the everyday man, one unable to spend the time to critically think about what he watches. The show did not fly under 69MoeLester420's radar, as the true intellectuals over there were not able to only see the genius in such a masterpiece but even responded with their own. On June 4, Pickle Jimmy was released into the world, which has remained changed by it ever since.
On the very same day, lightning would be captured in a bottle once more, as emojis would be added to the server. Trollface was the first one suggested by none other than Deez, yet it was soon trumped by the world-famous Trollbama, courtesy of r/trollbama, a subreddit once moderated by Mr. Sex, with the task of keeping the place alive now having been passed down to WalterWhiteOnReddit. As inconceivable as it may seem that comedy gold would be struck two times in a single day, the third one was the real kicker, a combination of the two worth more than the sum of its parts, the :picklejimmy: emoji. After such a massive hit, the entire comedy industry went out of business, knowing that nothing was going to surpass the heights achieved on that faithful day.
After that day, the server became active once more, actual conversations started being held in between image posts, and the server was almost as alive as the day it opened.
On June 20, koonsbmw joined the server.
On July 31, Max5923 suggests making an automoderator response under every post containing the server link. Up to that point, new members could only join by following the link on a subreddit post, leading to a low member count during its first few months. While nothing was done to follow through with the suggestion, over time it got repeated so many times it was finally implemented.
CatKicker6617
Contrary to popular belief, the r/69MoeLester420 subreddit was not opened by Moe himself. Instead, the user KittenStomper6617 was responsible for the creation and early growth of the community. Having gotten permabanned from Reddit, not much was known about what happened to him in months, as he was not a member of the server. All ties between him and the mod team were severed, or so was thought, until August 2, when WalterWhiteOnReddit noticed a peculiar comment under one of the subreddit's posts.
The reaction was primal, instantaneous, without thought, the idea that the owner of the subreddit was back after so many months in exile was astounding, almost seemed too good to be true. An entire evening was spent in blissful ignorance, the sight of CatKicker6617 was treated almost like the return of the Messiah, until another message was received and all hopes went down the drain. A reply under one of CatKicker6617's comments which contained a link to a comment in the subreddit r/TrueSTL, a subreddit KittenStomper6617 famously used to frequent. Once clicked, the link led to an edited comment of KittenStomper6617's, calling CatKicker6617 out, exposing them for the fraud they were. The joy found from seeing KittenStomper6617 soon started to fade, until a realization was made moments after! KittenStomper6617 was still alive, actively editing his comments! The alt account with which KittenStomper6617 notified the moderators about the edit got banned only hours later. Although KittenStomper6617 was gone, there remained hope.
On December 3, Ivan697 joined the server.
The Dark Ages
On December 6, the server link was added as an automatic response, with every post on the subreddit now containing an automoderator reply which would lead to the server. While previously the majority of the conversations were held almost exclusively by the mod team, with the notable exceptions of the users Deez and Norman the Mormon, this action resulted in a sudden influx of new users who started to participate in the discussion. Given the sheer brilliance of the posts present on the subreddit, it was of no surprise then that the moment the server opened it took a major downturn in quality. This period, having such a negative impact on the overall state of the server, allows for the server's history to be split into two parts, the first part, when the server used to be nothing more than a glorified group chat for the moederators, and the second, when the server truly became part of the community at large. Although the first few days after the opening were rough, it would prove to be a blessing in disguise, in time revealing many issues present in the server and the mod team.
