Originally, u/turlockmike was posting anti-memes on the normal /r/Memes subreddit, and unfortunately had no luck getting attention from it. As it had still been a niche humor type. He would try to find a subreddit in which he could post "reverse memes", unfortunately he had no luck besides finding a community with a strange name. The AntiMeme subreddit would be created on the 8th of February, 2012. Unfortunately enough as he states the name r/AntiMemes was taken. Thus he had to make the name just "AntiMeme"

After creating the subreddit on the 8th of February, 2012 u/turlockmike would invite some of his friends and garner atleast a dozen users frequenting the subreddit after 6 months of the community being active. He would leave reddit for a year only to see over 1,000 users that had joined the community in the span of the time he was inactive. Other members interacted with the community and it had pretty much ran itself, without any need of moderation. Turlockmike would adress this and begin moderating the subreddit consistently, a few posts would make it into the front page of reddit, youtubers made videos about the subreddit and people started linking the subreddit more often due to other communities not wanting anti-memes in their subreddit. This would accelerate the growth of the subreddit by a pretty big amount, maybe even (too) big of an amount. As turlockmike stated there was a period in the subreddit's lifespan in 2021 when the subreddit had become so large the content was getting dilluted.

Eventually a rewrite of the rules and a post was made, detailing what exactly an anti-meme was. Helping the community to help afloat, as the members of the community were getting relatively tired of posts which weren't exactly antimemes being posted onto the subreddit. On April 6th, 2023 the subreddit would celebrate it's 10th birthday.

The logo has the letter م which originates from languages like Arabic, Urdu, Persian and etc. The letter is pronounced as "meem", or well, you can say "meme". Because the name is antimeme, the letter م (meme) has been crossed in the logo
